Dental crowns in Turkey: the right material for the right tooth.
A crown is not one product. Zirconium and E.max behave differently under load and under light, and putting the wrong one on the wrong tooth is the most common reason crown work looks or feels wrong later. This guide explains which belongs where, what each costs per tooth, and what happens across the week.

A crown is a structural repair, not a cosmetic one
Crowns exist to hold a weakened tooth together. They also happen to change how it looks, which is why they get sold as cosmetics. Getting the reason right matters, because a crown removes tooth in every direction and there is no way back.
A dentist fits a crown when what is left of the natural tooth can no longer take the load on its own. That happens after a large filling, after root canal treatment, after a fracture, or after years of grinding have worn the tooth down. The crown wraps the remaining structure and stops it splitting.
Before agreeing to one, it is worth knowing what the lesser options are, because a good examination will offer them first:
| Option | Covers | Tooth removed | Right when | From |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| White filling | A cavity or small chip | Only the damaged part | The tooth still has most of its own walls | £70 |
| Laminate veneer | Front surface only | Very little, front face only | The tooth is sound but discoloured, chipped or slightly out of line | £210 |
| Crown | The whole tooth, all round | Significant, in every direction | The tooth is heavily filled, root-treated, cracked or badly worn | £165 |
| Implant and crown | Replaces the tooth entirely | N/A — the tooth is gone or unsaveable | There is nothing left worth building on | £390 + crown |
When a crown is genuinely the correct answer
- After root canal treatment, particularly on back teeth. A root-treated tooth is more brittle and splits under chewing load without full coverage.
- Where a filling occupies more than about half the tooth. At that point the filling is doing the work the tooth should be doing.
- On a cracked tooth, where a crown binds the fragments and prevents the crack running into the root.
- On teeth worn flat by grinding, where height and function need rebuilding, not just appearance.
- On top of an implant, where the crown is the visible tooth and there is no natural structure to preserve at all.
- As bridge abutments, where crowns on the teeth either side carry a replacement tooth between them.
Which crown belongs on your tooth?
Three questions. The logic below is the same reasoning our clinicians apply at the chair — position, condition, and whether you grind. It is an orientation tool, not a diagnosis.
This tool cannot see your gums, your bite or your X-rays, and those change the answer. Treat the result as the question to ask your dentist, not the plan.
Zirconium and E.max, and why we use both
Neither is the better crown. One is stronger, one handles light better, and a well-planned mouth often uses both — E.max where the smile shows, zirconium where the chewing happens.
Monolithic zirconium crown
Milled from a single solid block of zirconia, so there is no separate porcelain layer that can chip away — the historic weakness of older layered crowns. Very high fracture resistance, which makes it the sensible choice for molars, for long bridges, and for anyone who grinds. Modern multilayer zirconia has closed most of the old appearance gap, though at the very front, under strong light, it is still slightly more opaque than E.max.
IPS e.max® crown
A glass ceramic that transmits light in a way close to natural enamel, so the crown picks up colour from the tooth behind and beside it instead of sitting there as a flat white block. That optical behaviour is why it is the front-tooth standard. It is strong enough for front teeth and premolars, but it is not the material to put under a heavy molar bite or on a long bridge span.
What about metal-fused crowns?
Porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns are the older technology and are still widely used because they are cheap. The problem is the metal substructure: as gums recede over the years it shows as a grey line at the gum margin, and the porcelain layered over the top can chip. For visible teeth we do not consider them an acceptable long-term aesthetic result, which is why they are not on our price list.
Temporary crowns are not an upsell
Between preparation and final fitting, your prepared teeth are vulnerable and sensitive. Temporary crowns protect them, keep the gum in the right shape, and let you see the planned shape before it is permanent. At £60 per tooth they are a small part of the cost and a non-negotiable part of the treatment. If a clinic proposes leaving you without them, that is a red flag rather than a saving.
What a crown costs, and what usually comes with it
A crown price on its own is rarely the whole cost. A root-treated tooth may need a post and a build-up first. These are our published list prices for everything involved, so you can total your own case.

What happens to the tooth, in order
Crown treatment at LD Klinik is completed inside one trip of five to seven days, with two main clinical appointments and a try-in stage between them.
-
Day 1 · Morning
Examination, imaging and written plan
Clinical examination, X-rays, and CBCT 3D imaging where implants or surgery are involved. We confirm which teeth genuinely need crowning and which do not, and issue your itemised written quotation. Nothing is prepared until you have agreed the plan and the price.
-
Day 1 · Before preparation
Shade and shape decided with you
Shade is chosen against your face in natural light, not from a chart under surgery lighting. Where several teeth are involved, the design is agreed on screen first. This is the stage where changes cost nothing.
-
Day 2
Preparation under local anaesthetic
The tooth is reshaped to make room for the crown, and any decay removed. If the tooth is root-treated, a post and core build-up are placed to give the crown something solid to sit on. A digital intra-oral scan is taken — no impression trays.
-
Day 2 · Same appointment
Temporary crowns fitted
You leave the clinic with teeth. Temporaries protect the prepared tooth, hold the gum in shape, and let you live with the planned form for a few days before it becomes permanent.
-
Day 3–5
Try-in before anything is cemented
The finished crowns are tried in unbonded. We check the fit at the gum margin, the contact with neighbouring teeth, the bite, and the shade against your natural teeth. If something is wrong, it goes back to the laboratory. This is the most important appointment of the week.
-
Day 5–7
Final cementation and bite refinement
Crowns are bonded, excess cement removed carefully from the gum margin, and the bite adjusted and polished. You receive your 5-year written guarantee document with the materials used, plus aftercare instructions in your own language.
Crowns on implants take two trips, not one
If the crown is going on an implant rather than a natural tooth, the schedule changes completely — and this is where honest clinics and fast ones part company.
An implant has to fuse with bone before it can carry a permanent crown. That process takes months, not days, and it cannot be shortened by wanting it shortened. The realistic sequence is:
- Trip one, 5–7 days. Extraction if needed, implant placement, grafting or sinus lifting where the bone requires it, and a temporary solution so you are not left with a visible gap.
- Healing, 3–6 months at home. The implant integrates. You are in contact with us remotely, and your own dentist can see you if anything concerns you.
- Trip two, 5–7 days. Abutment fitted, digital scan, and the definitive crown designed, tried in and cemented.
Where several implants support a full arch, a titanium base is used to link them, priced at £350 per jaw. For the full implant pathway see our dental implant and full mouth implant guide, or the All-on-4 and All-on-6 pages.
Why a bridge for one gap costs three crowns
Bridge pricing confuses almost everyone, and it is the most common source of "but the quote said £165" disputes. The rule is simple once you know it.
A bridge is priced per unit, and a unit is one crown-shaped piece of ceramic. Replacing a single missing tooth with a conventional bridge means crowning the tooth on each side and suspending a false tooth between them. That is three units, not one.
| Situation | Units | Zirconium total | E.max total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single crown on one tooth | 1 | £165 | £210 |
| One missing tooth, bridged | 3 | £495 | £630 |
| Two adjacent teeth missing, bridged | 4 | £660 | £840 |
| Same gap, implant and crown instead | 1 implant + 1 crown | £555 | £600 |
Notice the last row. For a single missing tooth, an implant and crown often costs about the same as a three-unit bridge — and it does not require grinding down two healthy neighbouring teeth to carry it. Where those neighbours already need crowns anyway, the bridge makes sense. Where they are untouched and healthy, it usually does not. That is the conversation to have at your examination.
Totals are calculated from published list prices for illustration. E.max is not recommended for long bridge spans; zirconium is used where a bridge crosses more than one missing tooth.
How long crowns last, and what actually kills them
Well-fitted ceramic crowns commonly last ten to fifteen years and often considerably longer. When they fail early, it is almost never the ceramic that failed.
Decay at the margin
The crown cannot decay. The natural tooth just underneath its edge can, and that is where crowns are lost. Flossing the margin daily is not optional maintenance — it is the maintenance.
Gum disease and recession
As gums recede the crown margin becomes visible and exposed. Stabilising gum health before treatment, and six-monthly hygiene afterwards, is what keeps the margin buried where it belongs.
Grinding without a guard
Night-time clenching applies forces no ceramic is designed for. A night guard at £60 protects several thousand pounds of work, and grinding without one is usually a guarantee exclusion.
Your guarantee, and what it does not cover
LD Klinik issues a 5-year written guarantee on implants and prosthetics as a document listing your case details and the materials used. Read the exclusions before you fly rather than after. Across the industry, guarantees on ceramic work typically do not cover damage from accidents or trauma, failure caused by untreated gum disease or poor oral hygiene, damage from grinding where a prescribed night guard was not worn, or work altered by another clinician. Ours is no different, and we would rather you knew that in advance.
Keep your six-monthly check-ups with a dentist at home. A crown fitted in Antalya still needs a hygienist in Manchester, Dublin, Kraków or Bucharest.
Eight signs a crown was fitted badly
Check these at your try-in appointment, while everything is still fixable, and again a few weeks after you get home. Any of them is worth raising immediately rather than living with.
- Food traps at the edgeConsistently catching food at one specific crown usually means the contact point with the neighbouring tooth is wrong.
- Floss shreds or catchesA snagging thread indicates a rough or overhanging margin, which will collect plaque and cause decay.
- The bite feels highOne tooth touching before the others transfers the whole force of your bite onto a single crown.
- Gum stays red and puffyPersistent inflammation around one crown after two weeks points to a margin problem or cement left behind.
- A dark line at the gumOn a metal-backed crown this is the substructure showing. All-ceramic crowns should not do this.
- Sensitivity that worsensSome sensitivity after preparation is normal and should reduce weekly. Increasing pain needs investigating.
- Shade jumps at the last toothA visible colour step where the ceramic stops means the transition point was chosen badly.
- Gaps at the gum lineA visible dark triangle between crowns and gum indicates the emergence shape is wrong.
If you notice any of these while still in Antalya, tell your coordinator that day. Once you have flown home, message photographs — most issues can be assessed remotely, and where a remake is covered by the guarantee we arrange it directly with you.
Dental crowns in Turkey — answered plainly
How much does a dental crown cost in Turkey?
At LD Klinik a monolithic zirconium crown is £165 per tooth (€200 / $225) and an E.max crown is £210 per tooth (€240 / $280). A temporary crown is £60. Where the tooth needs preparation first, root canal treatment is £100 per root, a post is £60 and a core build-up filling is £70. Your written quotation itemises every element per tooth and is fixed before you book a flight.
Which is better, a zirconium crown or an E.max crown?
Neither is better overall — they are used for different jobs. E.max is a lithium disilicate glass ceramic that transmits light like natural enamel, making it the standard choice for front teeth and premolars. Monolithic zirconium is milled from a solid block and is considerably stronger under load, making it the correct choice for molars, for bridges spanning more than one missing tooth, and for patients who grind. Many treatment plans use both in the same mouth.
How long does crown treatment take in Antalya?
Crowns on natural teeth are completed in a single trip of five to seven days: examination and planning on day one, preparation and temporary crowns on day two, an unbonded try-in around days three to five, and final cementation on days five to seven. Crowns on implants require two trips of five to seven days, separated by three to six months of healing at home while the implant fuses with bone.
Do crowns hurt?
Preparation and fitting are carried out under local anaesthetic, so the appointments themselves are not painful. Mild sensitivity to hot and cold is normal for a few days after preparation and while wearing temporaries, and settles once the final crown is bonded. Sensitivity that increases rather than decreases over the weeks afterwards is not normal and should be checked. Sedation is available at £390 per hour for anxious patients and is agreed in advance.
How long do dental crowns last?
Ten to fifteen years is typical for well-fitted ceramic crowns, and often longer. What ends a crown's life is almost never the ceramic itself: it is decay in the natural tooth just under the margin, gum disease causing recession, or grinding without a night guard. Daily flossing at the crown margin, six-monthly hygiene appointments, and a guard if you clench are what determine the result.
Why does a bridge for one missing tooth cost more than one crown?
Because bridges are priced per unit, and a unit is one crown-shaped piece of ceramic. Replacing a single missing tooth conventionally means crowning the tooth on each side and suspending a false tooth between them — three units in total, so £495 in zirconium. For a single gap this often costs about the same as an implant with a crown, which does not require grinding down two healthy neighbouring teeth.
Can I get a crown fitted in one day?
Some single crowns can be milled chairside with CEREC technology where the case allows. In practice most international patients are treated across a five to seven day visit instead, because that schedule includes an unbonded try-in stage before cementation. That try-in is where fit, contact points, bite and shade are verified and problems are still free to correct, and skipping it to save two days is a poor trade.
Will a crown look like my other teeth?
A single crown matched to surrounding natural teeth is the hardest case in restorative dentistry, and the shade should be chosen against your face in natural light rather than under surgery lighting. E.max is generally used for single front crowns because its translucency picks up colour from the teeth around it. If you are planning to whiten your natural teeth, do that first — ceramic does not respond to whitening agents, so the crown must be matched to the final shade, not the current one.
What is the difference between a crown and a veneer?
A veneer is a thin ceramic facing bonded to the front surface of the tooth and removes very little tooth structure. A crown covers the whole tooth and requires it to be reshaped in every direction, which cannot be reversed. Veneers suit sound teeth with colour, chip or minor alignment complaints. Crowns are for teeth that are structurally weakened — heavily filled, root-treated, cracked or worn.
Do you use metal-fused crowns?
No. Porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns are cheaper but carry a metal substructure that shows as a grey line at the gum margin as gums recede over the years, and the layered porcelain can chip away from the metal beneath. For visible teeth we do not regard them as an acceptable long-term result, which is why they do not appear on our price list.
What happens if my crown fails after I fly home?
Contact the clinic first and send photographs — many issues can be assessed remotely, and minor adjustments such as a high bite can be carried out by a local dentist. Where a restoration is covered by our 5-year written guarantee and needs remaking, that is arranged with us directly. The guarantee document sets out what is covered and what is excluded; read it before you fly rather than after.
Do I need a night guard after crown treatment?
If you grind or clench, yes — and most people who grind do not know they do until a dentist points out the wear pattern. Night-time clenching generates forces well beyond normal chewing, and it is the most common cause of ceramic chipping in otherwise well-fitted work. A gum shield is £60 and is standard guarantee-related advice where bruxism is identified at examination.
